Updated: Feb 20, 2023

Do you write by a pen or with a pen? Do you learn English by watching or with watching English lessons online?

If you're not sure which to use, don't worry! I have the answer for you.

By

Use by with verbs ending in ing.

Example: I learned English by reading lots of books.

You can also use by with some nouns, like transportation.

Example: He commutes an hour by train.

With

Use with before nouns that are tools.

Example: I write with a pen.
